The east coast of the islands faces onto the deep waters of the Mozambique Channel and below the surface are wild water reefs filled with pods of dolphins, the rare dugong, and several species of marine turtle. Over 2000 fish species can be found in the marine eco-system surrounding the islands, which was proclaimed as a National Park in 1971. The islands are home to about 45 reptile and amphibian species. The region offers over 160 species of birds, endemic butterflies, suni antelope and freshwater crocodiles.
