There is no better way to savour the Okavango Delta and experience its unparalleled wildlife population than on horseback. The annual flooding of the area leaves vast swathes of the Delta inaccessible to vehicles, making horses the most natural and exciting means to explore. Our experienced guides are full of fascinating stories about the ever-changing landscape, its trees and plants, and have an incredible ability to spot even the best-camouflaged wildlife.
Upon arrival in Maun, you are met and transferred by light aircraft, then by game drive vehicle, to Macatoo Camp which overlooks a seasonal flood plain lagoon. You are met with a song, and refreshing drink, before going to your tent, to unpack. Accommodation is luxurious, and the tent has a private veranda, overlooking the plain. After lunch under the trees, there is usually time for a rest before the evening ride where you get to know your horse. Return to camp for a candle-lit dinner.
An early morning wake-up call, with a up of tea or coffee, before a light breakfast, and then you start your morning ride. Travelling westwards following elephant trails from one palm Falcon to another, through seas of grass, into the backcountry. After lunch and a siesta, you ride out into the plains, and enjoy a refreshing sun downer, before returning to camp, and dinner.
You leave camp early today, to investigate fresh game tracks, joining the rare semi-aquatic antelope, the red lechwe, as they thunder through the water meadows. A champagne breakfast is waiting for you under a large baobab tree. The evening ride is spent exploring the lower flood plains where elephant often gather at a pool. As dusk closes in, enjoy drinks around the fire.
The ride today is through different country, as you make your way through clouds of bushman hair grass to plains dotted with fig trees. There is a chance that you will encounter giraffe or shy antelope while passing through mopane woodlands. The pace increases as you break out onto the flood plains, often disturbing troops of baboons. You return to the camp for an afternoon spent at leisure and later a night drive by spotlight.
While the staff pack up camp, you leave for the ‘fly-camp’, riding deeper into the heart of the Delta. On reaching another river system, you arrive at the new camp, which is already set up, and looks out over a favourite elephant watering hole. The stay here is for one night, enjoying a genuine bush experience. The afternoon may be spent swimming or walking. Fires are lit at night, creating a strong human presence to keep marauding animals away from the horses. The night watch is fun, and riders usually join in.
Having kept watch under the stars, the next morning splash through water on the vast open plains, home to wildebeest and zebra. The riding may be fast as you approach deep reedy areas full of bird life. After a break, you ride back to Macatoo Camp along the numerous waterways lined with large trees.
This is your last full day’s riding, and you get to canter through the shallow flood plains, admiring the deeper pools of lilies. Here, the buffalo gather in numbers and you have to creep up to them using islands for cover. The evening offers a last quiet ride with memorable smells of sage as the sun goes down with final sundowners in a surprising location.
For your final ride, you go along some of the high palm islands which offer great vistas. You have the chance for a final exhilarating gallop and run with the game before returning to camp to prepare for your onward journey

We travelled with Falcon Safaris in Zimbabwe and Botswana for 16 days. Falcon designed a wonderful trip with private guide to the most interesting sites in both countries. The organization of the whole trip was excellent, flights within the country, accommodation and activites. The guides were very knowledgable and told us a lot about the countries, their history, people, economy and much more. We visited the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, the Victoria Falls Tour and a number of national parks in both countries.
Rhino tracking was a real adventure! We had tremendous further game drives and saw very many animals - we did the Big Five. We had much more Victoria Falls Activities than planned and enjoyed very much.We strongly recommend Falcon Safaris to everyone planning a trip to Southern Africa and East Africa.
Our Consultant Vimbai was very helpful and accommodating. We stayed at the Elephant hills hotel which was nothing short of amazing. Our activities included a helicopter flight, dinner cruise as well as a morning game drive. All the activities were absolutely amazing.
We worked with Gertrude to schedule and organize everything and she did an excellent job. I asked a lot of questions via e-mail and she answered everyone in a timely helpful manner. Our guide at Victoria Falls was also great. He met us at the airport, provided a thoughtful tour of the Falls and got us to our next guide in Botswana. Our lodgings at River View Lodge were just as described- very comfortable and excellent food. All the staff were so pleasant and helpful. If I had to do it again I would arrange a morning boat ride as well. We only did the sunset boat rides and they were the high point of our entire trip- we saw so many animals and our guide was very knowledgeable. Just a great experience. Our lodgings at Oddball's Enclave was rustic and we loved it. So great to disconnect from the world for a bit. Leo, our guide, was the best - got us out and about, saw fantastic wildlife and got back to camp safely each time. Doc manages the camp so well. This whole trip was planned and organized by Falcon Safaris and we could not have been happier.
Falcon safaris have given my the correct advice with excellent service. The only suggestion will be to work closer with the lodges to confirm bookings as soon as possible. We have booked and pay our deposit a year in advance. We have only receive our final convermation from Chobe Safari lodge a week before departure. I do realize its not within your controle but with limit alternatives and a group of 14 people it becomes an issue to find alternative accomodation if the booking was cancelled.
