A Zambian Bush Camp Offering an Authentic Wilderness Safari
Island Bush Camp offers untouched wilderness and walking safaris in the heart of South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. This authentic Zambian bush camp is set under the cool shade of old mahogany trees on the banks of the Luangwa River.
With views that stretch from the Chindeni hills in the Eastern corners of the Luangwa Valley to the Muchinga escarpment in the West, you are presented with the complete natural boundary of this remote and achingly beautiful wilderness. Every day is presented with new experiences and never the same.
Island Bush Camp is located around 3 hours South of Island Bush Camp. On the way to reach this safari bush camp, you drive through the South Luangwa National Park, passing through woodland and open plains.
Far from the well-beaten tracks, Island Bush Camp offers complete solitude.
Bush Camp Chalets
Island Bush Camp has just 5 bush chalets tastefully decorated in a simple, chic bush style. They are open to the front with stunning views over the river and allow the sounds of the bush to drift through. Each chalet is built out of natural materials and sits on a wooden platform high off the ground. Cozy beds are turned down each night behind tented mozzie nets.
Each chalet has an en suite bathroom on the same level as the rooms also facing the river. The bathroom is open to the sky, with a stylish and practical canvas bucket shower, that is filled with hot water once a day. There is cold running water and flush toilets.
Bush Camp Area
The shady lounge area is the focal point of the camp, with comfortable chairs and attentive staff behind the bar. This is just the perfect place to relax with binoculars at hand to take a closer look at any of the passers-by on ‘bush TV’. The fireplace right at the riverfront is the ideal place to watch the sunrise and fall. Here you marvel at the galaxy of stars and spend the evening listing to the sounds of the wild or to the many bush tales the guides like to share with their guests.
The bush camp kitchen provides fantastic meals cooked on the wood-burning stove and served in the dining area or under the Zambian night sky. Early morning tea is taken around the campfire during sunrise where the bread is freshly toasted over the fire. There is no better way to start the day in the bush!
Walking Safaris
Walking safaris are our main activity in this heavenly place. This is your chance to explore the bush on a different level. You walk in small groups and will be escorted by an armed official wildlife scout and our experienced guides. This ensures your safety and gives you an exciting and educational view of the bush at ground level.
You will find that your senses are heightened to the sights and sounds of your surroundings. Encounters can vary from a chance meeting with elephants to sitting and watching a cloud of Carmine bee-eaters coming and going from their seasonal colonies on the high sandbanks of the Luangwa River.
Although the main activity at Island Bush Camp is walking safaris, we do also use a safari vehicle to get into a variety of walking areas or return from a walk after dark to discover some of the nocturnal wildlife in the area.

We travelled with Falcon Safaris in Zimbabwe and Botswana for 16 days. Falcon designed a wonderful trip with private guide to the most interesting sites in both countries. The organization of the whole trip was excellent, flights within the country, accommodation and activites. The guides were very knowledgable and told us a lot about the countries, their history, people, economy and much more. We visited the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, the Victoria Falls Tour and a number of national parks in both countries.
Rhino tracking was a real adventure! We had tremendous further game drives and saw very many animals - we did the Big Five. We had much more Victoria Falls Activities than planned and enjoyed very much.We strongly recommend Falcon Safaris to everyone planning a trip to Southern Africa and East Africa.
Our Consultant Vimbai was very helpful and accommodating. We stayed at the Elephant hills hotel which was nothing short of amazing. Our activities included a helicopter flight, dinner cruise as well as a morning game drive. All the activities were absolutely amazing.
We worked with Gertrude to schedule and organize everything and she did an excellent job. I asked a lot of questions via e-mail and she answered everyone in a timely helpful manner. Our guide at Victoria Falls was also great. He met us at the airport, provided a thoughtful tour of the Falls and got us to our next guide in Botswana. Our lodgings at River View Lodge were just as described- very comfortable and excellent food. All the staff were so pleasant and helpful. If I had to do it again I would arrange a morning boat ride as well. We only did the sunset boat rides and they were the high point of our entire trip- we saw so many animals and our guide was very knowledgeable. Just a great experience. Our lodgings at Oddball's Enclave was rustic and we loved it. So great to disconnect from the world for a bit. Leo, our guide, was the best - got us out and about, saw fantastic wildlife and got back to camp safely each time. Doc manages the camp so well. This whole trip was planned and organized by Falcon Safaris and we could not have been happier.
Falcon safaris have given my the correct advice with excellent service. The only suggestion will be to work closer with the lodges to confirm bookings as soon as possible. We have booked and pay our deposit a year in advance. We have only receive our final convermation from Chobe Safari lodge a week before departure. I do realize its not within your controle but with limit alternatives and a group of 14 people it becomes an issue to find alternative accomodation if the booking was cancelled.
We love Africa's diversity and create amazing trips for you. With 30+ years of experience, we customize every trip just for you.
