About Namibia

Namibia: traveling through this land of contrasts evokes a feeling of timelessness, as though nothing has changed since colonial times and yet the world’s oldest desert is constantly shifting. From its broad horizons to its endless dune seas and along its ghostly coastline, Namibia serves up dramatic sights and experiences at almost every turn: extraordinary wildlife encounters, rusting shipwrecks swallowed by sand, ancient San art emblazoned on parched rocks, traditional cultures, urban craft breweries, and an ever-present colonial charm. Even in its sparsest settings, Namibia imbues a richness of life.

Need to know

The Namib Desert, our planet's oldest desert, makes Namibia one of the least densely populated places on Earth. Its enormous dunes – some of which are the highest in the world – and arid gravel plains and mountainous terrain make Namibia's scenery and landscapes some of the most dramatic you will ever see. In fact, in some areas of this mesmerizing country, you'll feel like you've landed on Mars.

Need to Know About Namibia

Wildlife

Southern Namibia isn't a prime big game region, though if you want to see the animals of the Namib Desert (oryx, springbok, kudu, zebra, giraffe, hartebeest, leopard, hyena, jackal, and fox) the NamibRand Nature Reserve, a huge conservation area with spectacular scenery and a low density of visitors, is your best bet.

Season & Climate

The dry season (June to October) is considered the best time to visit Namibia for wildlife sightings, especially in Etosha over July and August. May’s mild climate makes it an ideal month in which to travel the country, offering more affordable accommodation with better availability. November is much the same, but the occasional showers occur as the rainy season approaches.During the low season (December to April), the rains can make some areas inaccessible and bring with them high humidity and soaring temperatures; this is, however, the best time to visit Namibia for birdwatching.
