Lake Kariba Location spreads around 1,300 kilometres upstream from the Indian Ocean along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is over 223 kilometres (139 mi) long and up to 40 kilometres (25 mi) in depth.

It was filled between 1958 and 1963 following the Kariba Dam located at its northeastern end.

The Hot Dry Season (August-October)-

The weather in Kariba remains normal and windy during the month of August and September. But it gets extremely hot during the dry months between the ends of September to November. The temperature often increases up to 40°C.

Game viewing is the best during this dry season when everywhere looks dry and thin bush makes wildlife viewing easy. This is also called the high season, so can be difficult to find accommodation. So, it’s advisable to book well in advance.

The Hot Wet Season (November-April)-

During the hot wet season, the weather in Lake Kariba remains warm and humid as well as thundershowers in the afternoon.

November to April is the heavy rainy season in Zimbabwe. The rain starts with short raindrops and then exceeds strong thundershowers. There is usually beautiful and bright sunshine in between the shower.

How to get to Lake Kariba

Getting to Kariba by Road

Victoria Falls to Mlibizi or Binga- Travelers can get from Victoria Falls to the western end of the lake; Mlibizi (250 km) in about 3hrs or Binga (300 km) in 4hrs.

If you don’t have a car, private transfers can be arranged quite easily.

Binga to Kariba- Different roads run along the south bank of Kariba from Binga to Kariba town. It is suitable for more seasoned adventure travellers.

This is a quite long journey about 400 km through the Charara basin to Kariba and takes around 8 hours.

Harare to Kariba- Getting to Kariba from Harare (365 km) takes 5-6 hours via a reasonable tar road. Several local buses run along this route.

Lusaka and Livingstone to Siavonga (Zambia), lake Kariba- If you travel through Lusaka to Siavango which is 195 km and it takes around 3.5 hours to drive. From Livingstone, it takes around 6-8 hours to 560 km.

The road conditions are quite good but the traffic may create a little worry about your travel.

Victoria Falls to Kariba town- Travelers can visit Kariba town from Victoria Falls by road, air, and boat options. Railway options and commercial flight options are not available there. Taking a charter flight is the easiest way to get to Kariba. With self-drive, you can also travel to Kariba.

Getting to Kariba by Air

There are no scheduled commercial flights available to get to Lake Kariba. Only by private chartered flight, travellers can get into it. Various charter companies give their service by linking up various safari camps between Victoria Falls, Hwange, Kariba, Mana Pools, and Harare.

The Kariba airport is the only airport in Kariba and there are several airstrips available around the lake. With a short boat ride, you can go the different camps.
