Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also making it a must-see destination for anyone seeking to witness the beauty of nature at its finest..
The falls mark the border line between Zimbabwe and Zambia. You’ll go for Victoria Falls Trips from either side, but Zimbabwe offers a view of 75% . You can also get to see the falls from an aerial view by going on micro light flights in Zambia.
The Zambezi River spans across 6 countries and the falls mark the halfway point of the river . From its source in Northwest Zambia to its mouth in the Indian Ocean. From the source to the falls it’s about 1300km and from the falls to its mouth it’s about 1400km.

The only other place you find this rare phenomenon is the Cumberland Falls near Corbin, Kentucky. A moon bow is a series of rainbows that are visible at night mainly when there is a full moon and as the moon rays refract in the spray of the falls it forms a beautiful rainbow that is such a delight to see.
There is a famous activity on the Zambian side that allows you to swim up to the edge of the waterfall at the famous Devils’ pool which is an interesting activity for those that dare themselves to have an adventure. The pool is adjacent to Livingstone Island. The pool is usually opened between mid- August to end of December when the when the water level is low and the flow is at its weakest.
On the Zimbabwean side of the falls there is the Victoria Falls Rainforest which happens to be the only place on earth where you get to see rain every single day of the year hence the popular name of the falls given by the Tonga,” Mosi-oa-Tunya” meaning the smoke that thunders.
Origin Of Its Name: The Victoria Falls were discovered by a British explorer and missionary, David Livingstone who became the first European to set eyes on of the world’s most beautiful wonder. He named them after the British monarch at the time, Queen Victoria. The local people had so much respect for him that the name remained unchanged to this day. Locally the falls are called “Mosi-oa-Tunya” the smoke that thunders.
The Nyami Nyami River God: The Zambezi River flows over the cascading Victoria Falls and the area is filled with great myths and legends. One of the legends that was believed by the local people is that the flooding waters of the falls and the thunder like noises were caused by spirits associated with evil. They would try to calm these by offering jewellery to what they believed was the river god, “the Nyami Nyami” as a sacrifice.
The Nyami Nyami is and has been sacred to the Tonga tribe. He is believed to be in Lake Kariba, which is situated northwards of the Victoria Falls. Nyami Nyami is described as a mix between a fish and a snake, you can buy the Nyami Nyami pendant which is a popular souvenir. The local people believed that wearing the pendant will give you protection. African mythology has it that the famous Nyami Nyami has been hiding since the white men first came to the Victoria Falls.
